Basel’s cathedral – a Romanesque-Gothic building and city landmark – is a backdrop to Basel’s sights unlike any other. Red sandstone, colourful roof tiles, two slender steeples and five aisles… all built between 1019 and 1500. Both steeples enjoy a heavenly view over Basel, the Black Forest and the Jura via steep spiral staircases with 242 steps each. From the 20-metre-high Pfalz – a raised terrace on which the eastern part of the choir was built – there’s an equally stunning panorama over the Rhine, Dreiländereck and Kleinbasel.
