This imposing building bears witness to Basel’s rich history. The 40-metre-high three-turreted tower, which can be walked under, was built at the end of the 14th century as part of the city wall. Its fairy tale features include metre-thick walls, thick oak gates, portcullis and drawbridge. Various sculptures on the facade include Saint Barbara, the patron saint of the Basel artillery, who receives special tributes every year. Once a year the three historic Basel city gates – Spalentor, St. AlbanTor and St. JohannsTor – open their doors, so to speak, inviting the public on a guided tour of the fortifications.
